Just a quick reminder that without the surprise success of Blade, the first superhero movie of the new millennium and the first movie period from Marvel, you wouldn’t have those movies and reboots and franchises about X-Men, Spiderman, Ironman, The Hulk, Batman, or The Avengers.

The success of Blade is what got producers thinking “Hmm, comicbook superheroes might be a safe bet after all and if the one with a black star can be a hit…

I have a feeling producers thought of Blade as this black niche movie, until all audiences came out to see it.

And now, comicbook films practically own the summer.

Even though representations of domestic violence abound in mass media and discussions take place on every front, rarely does the public link ending male violence to ending male domination, to eradicating patriarchy. Most citizens of this nation still do not understand the link between male domination and male violence in the home. And that failure to understand is underscored as our nation is called upon to respond to violent murders of family members, friends, and schoolmates by young males of all classes. In mass media everyone raises the question of why this violence is taking place without linking it to patriarchal thinking.

Izzie the orange tabby and Duchess the black & white domestic short hair. Izzie is finally old enough to get neutered but his human needs help to afford the low cost clinic next month. If you’d like to donate to help Izzie and/or Duchess get neutered and vaccinated you can do so via paypal.

Chavez Ravine

and today its Dodger stadium…

Los Angeles county sherrifs forced Chican@s out of their homes so that there could be a space for some kind of housing project but later was used for the Dodger stadium instead.  These pictures show the last remaining residences to the Chavez Ravine before Dodger Stadium was built.  From what I read, I felt like it was more of the city of Los Angeles’ fault for destroying this neighborhood, so that they could have a professional team play in their city as what other cities were doing.  The Dodgers could of moved anywhere else after they were in Brooklyn. These last pictures show Chicana Aurora Vargas as she does not comply to the city and the sheriffs demands to get out of her own home and is taken out by force.

Here is more detail of what happened to the Chavez Ravine:

BOOOKS!

My little sister got me an Amazon Gift Card for xmas so I went and bought some actual books! Two digitally and two in print. One of the print ones was for my mom, though. I really suck at accepting gifts. :D

If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho - Of the nine books of lyrics the ancient Greek poet Sappho is said to have composed, only one poem has survived complete. The rest are fragments. In this miraculous new translation, acclaimed poet and classicist Anne Carson presents all of Sappho’s fragments, in Greek and in English, as if on the ragged scraps of papyrus that preserve them, inviting a thrill of discovery and conjecture that can be described only as electric—or, to use Sappho’s words, as “thin fire … racing under skin.” By combining the ancient mysteries of Sappho with the contemporary wizardry of one of our most fearless and original poets, If Not, Winter provides a tantalizing window onto the genius of a woman whose lyric power spans millennia.

Watermind - From storm drains, illegal dumps, and flooded landfills, all of North America’s most advanced technology flows down the Mississippi River—microchips, nano-devices, pharmaceuticals, genetically modified seed—and lodges in the Louisiana delta. Out of this mire emerges a self-organized neural net, drifting in the water: the Watermind. It can freeze, boil, condense, and move—seemingly at will.

The Dark Wife - Three thousand years ago, a god told a lie. Now, only a goddess can tell the truth. Persephone has everything a daughter of Zeus could want—except for freedom. She lives on the green earth with her mother, Demeter, growing up beneath the ever-watchful eyes of the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. But when Persephone meets the enigmatic Hades, she experiences something new: choice. Zeus calls Hades “lord” of the dead as a joke. In truth, Hades is the goddess of the underworld, and no friend of Zeus. She offers Persephone sanctuary in her land of the dead, so the young goddess may escape her Olympian destiny. But Persephone finds more than freedom in the underworld. She finds love, and herself.

Go method or go home.

KENZI IS MY FOREVER FAVOURITE! Seriously, for her alone I’d watch this show. She is the best character in the history of tv.

Patriarchy has always seen love as women’s work, degraded and devalued labor. And it has not cared when women failed to learn how to love, for patriarchal men have been the most willing to substitute care for love, submission for respect. We did not need a feminist movement to let us know that females are more likely to be concerned with relationships, connection, and community than are males. Patriarchy trains us for this role. We do not need feminist movement to remind us again and again that love cannot exist in a context of domination, that the love we seek cannot be found as long as we are bound and not free.
