This evening it was just me and Lucretia. (via Spinster Cat Lady » Girl’s Night)
Starting on the 20th, wet food day, I started placing Lucretia’s food and water bowls outside the shelter. I’ve got to get her tamed down super fast and this is the best way.

Sithander is always trying to just take the toy and run :)
I’m a cat lady because I can’t bear to see cats in distress. Today when I went to feed my wild kitties I saw instead a boy cat that could have been Buddy’s twin. Except his fur was dirty and ruffled and he had scratches on his face. He was there because Lucretia was in heat. Yesterday there was a black kitty, the day before there was a big orange tom. All of them unkempt and bedraggled looking.
Lucretia herself was holed up in a tiny space between a semi-trailer’s tire and the underneath of the trailer. She was so tired she kept drifting off to sleep and then startling awake at the lightest sound. Until she’s out of heat she will get virtually no rest between those three (maybe more) tom cats.
Meanwhile, her babies are in hiding. Only Shy Shy came out today, none of the others. Not even Tummy who never misses a meal. I’m going to start grabbing kittens and bringing them home even though we cannot handle more cats in our apartment. I’m assuming, of course, that I’m able to get my hands on them at all.
Athena must be fixed or the boys would be harassing her as well. I’m relieved that she can’t get pregnant. So relieved.
As I was walking home, passing the shelter on the other side of the fence, Peekaboo appeared on top of a shelf that is in the back corner of the shelter. I almost wept with relief. I know that nature and life are what they are. I know that I can’t save every cat. But seeing Peekaboo made me realize that the others were undoubtedly just hiding for the day. And so I can keep going.
I told Buddy that he didn’t have to fight anymore. It’s not his job to run off those tom cats. And soon I’ll make it so that Lucretia never has to fight them for a moment of rest either.
Izzie the orange tabby and Duchess the black & white domestic short hair. Izzie is finally old enough to get neutered but his human needs help to afford the low cost clinic next month. If you’d like to donate to help Izzie and/or Duchess get neutered and vaccinated you can do so via paypal.
