POC can watch white shows and not endorse the whiteness in it. The fact that we enjoy the characters or the plot does not mean we can’t point out the problems or -isms inside.
What is problematic is policing what POC can/cannot engage in. I’m writing this in a specifically “Western” context, because I cannot turn on the tv, radio, ANYTHING, without it being white. Everything is white. Everything is straight. Everything is able-bodied. What do you expect of POC in this type of environment? Turn off our media and engage only in that which represents us? Or will you, oh high and mighty arbiters, let us enjoy what we want to enjoy?
We have no choice when it comes to the programming offered. We can either watch it or not. Whether we choose to do so or not, however, says absolutely nothing about our commitments to anti-racism. Because what you’re saying is that POC should only watch POC shows.
WE DO WATCH THEM. There are not enough of them. Some of us even leave “Western” media and head to other countries to watch their shows and cinema.
AND SHIT, BEING POC AND COMMITTED TO ANTI-RACISM DOESN’T MEAN WE CAN’T TAKE PART IN A FANDOM. HAVE YOU SEEN THE SHIT THAT GOES DOWN WHEN A POC CALLS OUT A FANDOM/SHOW FOR BEING RACIST? OR SEXIST?
