Amazon.com MP3 Store: Indie Label Samplers
So Amazon is having what it calls a “Free Indie Music Album Bonanza”, heh. It’s ten albums/collections from ten different labels. Bunch of different artists. I’ve gone through each of them and selected songs/albums that appealed to me enough to warrant downloading. Also, I found one band that I liked so much I ended up buying their album whole album right away.
First...

Video: It’s Not Fair by Lily Allen
When I reviewed the whole album, this song was one of the ones that gave me problems, I said: It’s Not Fair bothers me. Particularly these opening lines: Oh, he treats me with respect,
He says he loves me all the time,
He calls me 15 times a day,
He likes to make sure that I’m fine
The rest of the song is about the guy being a premature...

Pretty. Odd. - one year anniversary
weresoblogging:
I Just wanted to write you all a thank you note, Pretty Odd was released one year ago today, I remember playing Kimmel and seeing some of you singing the words to the new songs already, I didn’t even know all of them yet. Thanks to everyone who picked up the album, listened to it, came to see us play, or supported us in other ways. You’re the best.
Sincerely,
Ryan

My (Provisional) To Buy List for Albums Coming Out...
Silversun Pickups - Swoon
Release Date: Apr 14th, 2009
I’ll want to listen before purchasing, but I really enjoyed Panic Switch, so I’m hopeful.
ETA: May 5th: I’m waffling on this one. I haven’t taken the time to really listen to a full stream of it, and that might change my mind. But for now this has been back-burnered.

Handsome Furs & Fleet Foxes - Recommendations
Amazon.com’s MP3 store is bountiful for me tonight. They’ve got a Sub Pop Sampler, for free, and I grabbed a couple of songs off it.
I’ve never heard of the Handsome Furs before, but the 30 second listen made me seek out the video and I liked the full song as well as the video itself. Handsome Furs - I’m Confused (Album Version) - free download Handsome Furs...

John Mellencamp Talks About the Music Business
please be sure to read the whole article linked at the bottom of the quoted section
Image by Getty Images via Daylife
During the late 80s and early 90s the industry underwent a transformation and restructured, catalyzed by three distinct factors. Record companies no longer viewed themselves as conduits for music, but as functions of the manipulations of Wall Street. Companies were acquired,...

Fuck the trees, I like the forest
So, over on his Twitter Pete Wentz asked:
if you could take it all apart- see how it works but maybe not remember how to put it back together right- would you anyway?
My short answer is no.
What it boils down to, for me, is how I approach things. I tend toward a more wholistic (and yeah I know, the dictionary says “holistic” but that spelling [Greek roots be-damned] makes no...

Public Performance Royalties / Performance Rights...
So another issue facing the music industry is “public performance royalties” and there’s a Performance Rights Act trying to get passed. But what are they? Well the people over at Future of Music have a fact sheet:
In the United States, royalties for public performances are paid to songwriters, composers and publishers. But what about the person who performs the song?...

Say "No" to assholes, ie: brokencyde
tylerdumont:
So there’s a movement going on to get Brokencyde removed from warped tour. I’m all for it. Their lyrics condone racism, and statutory rape in just about every song, not to mention that their “music” is simply noise. They have no place in the music scene as all they’re out for is a quick buck all the while influencing they’re impressionable fans. They and their whole genre of...

Music Reviews & Recommendations
Three songs for you today from three different artists: Gliss, Voxtrot and White Lies
Beauty by Gliss
This is free for download over on the RCRD LBL site. I don’t have a ton to say about it, it’s just a lovely song. The vocals are good, mellow music. The singer has a low, sultry voice that I find quite appealing. And it’s long, 4:33 long. I approve.

Read the whole thing, or check out the quotes:
Trent Reznor’s thoughts on ticket re-selling / scalping
Here’s the rub: TicketMaster has essentially been a monopoly for many years - certainly up until Live Nation’s exclusive deal ran out. They could have (and can right now) stop the secondary market dead in its tracks by doing the following: limit the amount of sales per...

Dear Chairmen Kohl & Leahy and Ranking Members Hatch & Specter:
The merger as proposed before you on the surface may seem to be too much power in the hands of the few, and I can understand the need for Congress to review this matter. Here I would hope that my 20 years in the recording and touring business will allow...

Reshaping the music industry
Two posts, the first one is from the BBC and is a series of quotes by artists over in the UK talking about why they want a union of sorts. It’s hard to read some of their comments because some of them seem very confused/misinformed about exactly why their income is suffering during this transitional time. However, I think it’s utterly vital that something like this union comes about...

Musicians seek to free themselves from label...
Dave Rowntree said: “The digital revolution has swept away the old music business of the 1960s, and changed, forever, the relationship between artists and fans.
“For companies who made their living sitting between the two, these are increasingly hard times, but for music makers and music fans, this should be a fantastic opportunity.

House Concerts!
House Concerts - Mozart was onto something.
Mozart was well known for performing “parlor concerts,” in the homes of rich patrons who would delight in the opportunity to show off their acquaintance with him. Things have changed, however, and you no longer need to be rich to have access to some of the finest talent available. Furthermore, many of these artists are genuinely interested in their...

Popular With Teenage Girls, Thank Fuck
I think it’s absolutely fucking wonderful that bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, The Academy Is…, and Cobra Starship appeal so strongly to teenage girls. Here are bands that are actually musicians, for one thing. They care about the music they create. They know about the various styles of music and the history of it. On top of that, they sincerely...
